Japanese Iyashikei novels have become popular in translation, featuring whimsical stories of magic realism: magical book stores and coffee shops, often with a talking cat, offer time travel into your memories.

"The shop was tucked away in a place beyond anyone's understanding. In front of it stood a mysterious weeping cherry tree... bursting with blossoms in every imaginable shade of red and white."

The shop was named Sakura, run by a young girl in a pinafore with her calico cat, Kobako.

As Mio grieves her deceased mother, she finds a copy of The Little Prince, while clearing the house. Reading it causes the wooden bookshop to materialize out of nowhere, unconnected to this world. "Welcome... We've been expecting you." Offering books and coffee, it only appears in cherry blossom season when you are reading a favorite book. Mio reconnects to her mother's voice and finds a broader understanding of her history. An aged man suffering dementia in a rest home misses his deceased wife. Reading Natsume Soseki, the bookshop appears, offering him a chance to relive a special moment. Twin sisters Kaho and Shiho are growing apart. Reading J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, they enter together and remember a childhood friend they both loved. The final story has a deeper connection to the bookshop, with a woman who visits while reading Kenji Miyazawa. She grew up without her mother, named Sakura, who also owned a calico cat named Kobako.

Time doesn't flow in the same way in the bookshop. Much like reading itself, it becomes a dream or conduit to another place. As Japan's version of Cozy Lit, these are easy reads with a warm message. This held its own as a day's entertainment; however, I found it quickly faded into the mist like the vision of the bookshop itself.
